Sample's from the book:

Chapter 4: Getting Your First Customers

"Remember, someone who can vouch for your character—even if you haven’t done work for them—can still serve as a reference when you’re starting out. Just make sure to inform prospective customers upfront. Again, we are not going to deceive customers. You may be surprised to find how many past employers will allow you to use them as references. While they may see you as competition, many good and secure employers won’t view it that way. I’ve had employees go on to start their own businesses, and I’ve fed them work that helped them get off the ground. Helping others almost always pays off."

Excerpt from Chapter 6: Bidding and Pricing Like a Pro (Even When You’re New)

“Why did you bid a deck for $20,000 when a larger company bid $36,000, and an even larger one offered $18,000? What kind of margins are they making—and what should you be making? This chapter finally answers those questions.”

Excerpt from Chapter 9: Sales is Everything

"You’re going to feel like your prices are too high, and your hands may shake when handing the bids over. You’re right; your prices might be too high for someone doing odd jobs. However, that isn’t you. You are a legitimate company with a warranty, a sales process, insurance, and more. Hold your head up and remember who you are and what you represent. You are now a brand—a growing company."
